Why builders are polymaths, not specialists
Everyone thinks you need to pick one thing and master it. This is the biggest lie we tell people about building a career.
I want to learn filmmaking, design, how to fly planes, software, hardware. All of it. And everyone keeps telling me to pick one thing.
The advice is always the same. Specialize. Go deep on one skill. This is how you build a career. This is how you become valuable. The whole system rewards people who do one thing really well. Job descriptions want specialists. Companies hire experts. If you try to do everything, you’ll end up good at nothing.
I get the logic. If you need brain surgery, you want someone who does brain surgery every day. Someone who’s done it a thousand times. You don’t want someone who also does heart surgery and knee replacements on the side.
The thing is, most work isn’t brain surgery. Most of what we do isn’t specialized like this. And the best solutions usually come from people who can think across different areas. Someone who understands code and design makes better products than someone who only knows one. Someone who gets visual storytelling and technical systems can explain complex ideas better.
There’s this idea of being a polymath. Learning across multiple fields instead of going deep in just one. Leonardo da Vinci did art and engineering and anatomy. Benjamin Franklin did printing and science and politics. They didn’t stay in their lane. They learned whatever interested them.
I used to think only geniuses could do this. Then I looked at people doing it now. They’re just normal people who didn’t stop learning after they got decent at one thing. They kept going.
What I’ve noticed is how different skills feed into each other. Understanding systems from programming helps you design better workflows. Knowing composition from film makes your design work stronger. Learning to fly teaches you to manage complex processes, which helps with everything else.
The skills multiply. A designer who codes is worth more than a designer plus a coder because they can do things neither specialist can do alone. They understand both sides. They can prototype their own ideas. They can talk to engineers in their language. They can see problems from multiple angles at once.
The problem is time. You can’t learn everything at once. You can’t be great at ten things right now. So you need a strategy. You pick one or two things you’re actually good at, good enough for people to pay you. This becomes your base. Then you pick one or two things to actively learn. You focus on those for months or a year. When they get good enough, they join your base, and you pick new things to learn.
You build skills over years. By the time you’re forty or fifty, you have solid knowledge in five or six areas. This is when it gets interesting. This is when you can do things other people can’t because you see connections they miss.
The hard part is being bad at things. When you start learning something new, you’re terrible. Your first attempts are rough. You have to accept this. You have to be willing to be a beginner repeatedly. Once you get good at something, being bad at something else feels uncomfortable. Your ego fights it.
A lot of people stop exploring because they can’t handle being bad anymore. They found one thing they’re good at and they stay there. It’s safer. I understand it. It’s just not what I want.
Everything pushes you toward specialization. School makes you pick a major. Jobs want one clear role. LinkedIn wants a job title. Everyone wants to categorize you so they understand what you do. Going against this takes effort. People think you’re unfocused. They wonder why you can’t just pick something.
The education system especially pushes specialization hard. This made sense in the old economy. You learned a trade and you did it for forty years. The world changed slowly enough so what you learned at twenty still mattered at sixty.
This world is gone. Skills become outdated faster. Industries change. Entire job categories disappear and new ones emerge. What you learn today might be irrelevant in five years. Betting everything on one specialized skill is actually riskier now than it used to be.
Learning across multiple domains gives you options. If one industry collapses, you have other skills to fall back on. You’re antifragile in a way specialists aren’t.
The weird thing is how we celebrate polymaths from history while telling living people to specialize. We admire da Vinci and Franklin for their range. Then we turn around and tell young people to pick a lane and stay in it. We act like being a polymath was only possible in the past, when there was less to know.
This is backwards. Being a polymath is easier now than it’s ever been. You can learn almost anything online. You can access courses, tutorials, books, communities. Twenty years ago you needed to go to specific schools or live in specific cities. Now you need an internet connection and time.
The barrier isn’t access to information anymore. The barrier is permission. People don’t feel like they’re allowed to learn outside their field. They feel like they need to stay in their box.
Here’s what I’ve realized. The skills you think are unrelated often turn out to be connected. You learn photography and it makes you better at design because you understand light and composition. You learn music and it makes you better at writing because you understand rhythm and pacing. The connections aren’t always obvious upfront. They emerge later.
Here’s what really convinced me this path makes sense. Look at founders. Look at people who actually start companies and build them from scratch. Almost all of them are polymaths. They have to be.
When you start a company, you’re doing everything yourself. You’re writing code and designing interfaces and talking to customers and handling finances and doing marketing and managing operations. You can’t afford to hire specialists for everything when you’re just starting out. You have to figure it all out yourself.
The founders who succeed are the ones who can do all of it decently well. They can code well enough to build the first version. Design well enough so it’s usable. Sell well enough to get the first customers. Manage money well enough to keep the lights on. Market well enough so people hear about it.
You look at any successful founder and they know their whole company. They understand the technology. They understand the business model. They understand the market. They understand the operations. They can jump into any conversation and contribute because they’ve done every job at some point.
Elon Musk knows the engineering details of rockets and cars. He can talk specifics with his engineers. He also understands manufacturing and supply chains and marketing and finance. Mark Zuckerberg still codes. He understands the technical architecture of Facebook. He also understands product design and user psychology and business strategy. Brian Chesky from Airbnb came from design school, taught himself enough about technology to build the product, and learned business as he went.
These people didn’t specialize. They couldn’t afford to. They had to be good enough at everything to get the company off the ground. Even after they could afford to hire specialists, they kept their broad knowledge. It made them better leaders. They could evaluate what their teams were doing. They could spot problems early. They could make better decisions because they understood all the pieces.
The companies with problems are often the ones where the founder only knows one thing. The technical founder who builds great products nobody wants because they don’t understand customers. The business founder who can sell anything except they don’t have a product worth selling. The design founder who makes beautiful things which don’t work. You need all of it.
Specialists are crucial for execution. You need really good engineers to build complex systems. You need really good designers to create great experiences. You need really good salespeople to close deals. Those people go deep and this depth matters.
Polymaths are crucial for vision and leadership. They can see the whole picture. They can make tradeoffs between different parts of the system. They can spot opportunities requiring the combination of different capabilities. They’re the ones who start new things and lead organizations through complexity.
If you want to build something, if you want to start something, if you want to lead something, being a polymath is almost required. You need to know enough about everything to make good decisions. You can’t just delegate to specialists and hope it works out. You need to understand what they’re doing well enough to guide them.
The founders who succeed long-term are the ones who keep learning. They’re polymaths by necessity. They have to be good at technical things and people things and business things and strategic things. They have to understand details and big picture. They have to be able to switch contexts constantly.
So if you want to build something meaningful, learning broadly isn’t just nice to have. It’s essential. You need to know enough about enough different things to actually execute. Being a specialist might get you hired. Being a polymath lets you create things which wouldn’t exist otherwise.
This is the path I’m choosing. Learning everything I can across as many domains as possible. Getting good enough at each thing so they start to compound. Building the kind of broad knowledge base which lets you see opportunities other people miss and execute on them without needing permission or a team of specialists.
